Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Plenty of golfers have problems with shanking. In this month's video golf tip, Mel shows you a drill that can Put an end to the dreaded Shanks.

The Anti-Shank Move!

The anti-shank move is returning the lead forearm to the original position in the address position. You can teach yourself to do this in a couple of ways.

  1. Get someone to hold a club or alignment stick just barely touching your lead arm at address. Then, try and hit a shot without touching it.  If the arm drifts out, the hosel will move closer to the ball, and you will hit the ball right in the hosel.
  2. Push an alignment stick into the ground, as I am doing in the video.  Again, give yourself a minimal margin of error and see if you can hit shots without touching the alignment stick.

My Success Story.

I visit Club de Golf Malinalco in Malinalco, Mexico, every December and January.  I have many friends there, and it is a beautiful golf course with a temperature of 78 degrees year-round.  What a place to retire!

Last year as I arrived, a very good friend of mine, Rafael Tames, a dentist in Mexico City, came running up to me. "Mel, Mel, I am so desperate for your help.  I have been shanking for 6 months, and my handicap has gone up from a 6 handicap to a 12!  Can you help, as I am playing tomorrow? So I got out my video camera and took a video of Rafael. Then, as we sat in his home, watching the video on his TV, I drew a line along his lead forearm at the address position.

I showed him that he was coming over the top, and that was why he was shanking.  I then took him to the range and let him hit a few shots with his pitching wedge, holding an alignment stick I demonstrated in this video.  His shanking stopped immediately, and he was hitting the ball nice and solid out of the middle of the clubface.  The next day I was practicing on the range.

The cart path from the 9th green to the 10th tee passes right behind the driving range.  I saw Rafael on the 9th green and wondered how he was faring. Then, a few minutes later, I heard "Mel Sole, I Love You!" yelled out by Rafael.
