One of the secrets to hitting consistently solid golf shots is to swing at 90% of your power.
Why 90% with your irons? The irons are accuracy clubs, not distance clubs. Rather taking an extra club and swinging at 90% will lower both your scores and your handicap.
Ernie Els is also known as "The Big Easy" because of his silky smooth swing. His secret? Swing at 90%, I have very seldom seen Ernie swing at 100%. Even on par 5's.
In this Mel In Motion video golf tip, I demonstrate a 3-step process for determining 90% of your power.
How to hit the ball at 90%.
Step 1.
Take your 100-yard club. Set up a target at 50 yards. Take a full backswing but vary the downswing speed until you can hit the ball 50 yards. You now know what your 50% swing feels like.
Step 2.
Take your 1oo-yard club. Set up a target at 75 yards. Take a full backswing but vary the downswing speed until you can hit the ball 75 yards. You now know what your 75% swing feels like.
Step 3.
To get the feel of your 90% swing, take your 100-yard club and hit a target that is 90 yards away. Keep swinging until you can consistently hit the ball 90 yards. Now take your 200-yard club and hit a target that is 180 yards away. Those two practice sessions will give you the feel of what your 90% swing feels like. This is the swing you should be using on the golf course if you really want to increase your accuracy. Now you have The Big Easy's 90% Golf Swing. Of course, you can still swing your driver 100% as that is your distance club!
