Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC. We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993. We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.
This month's tip is suggested by George Chase, who emailed me saying, "I am shanking all my shots from my 2 iron down. Please help!"
Well, George, help is just a click away!
The shank is such a devastating shot. It can stick in your mind for a long time if you do not get rid of it immediately!
The main reason for a shank is that the clubhead path has moved to the outside of the address position, causing the ball to be struck with the hosel of the golf club. Thus, causing it to shoot off at almost 90 degrees to the intended line of flight.
The Cure.
Step 1.
Position the ball in the club's hosel and try to hit the ball with the toe of the club. This will make you bring the club back to the ball more from the inside.
Step 2.
Make sure that the lead forearm stays close to the body on the downswing. To get a feel for what you need to do, try the following drill.
The Drill.
3.
Take your right hand, place it over your left bicep (3)
4.
Swing the club holding the upper arm tight into your left side (4)
5.
As the club passes the hitting area, allow the left forearm to rotate, and the palm of the left hand will be at 90 degrees to the ground at the end of the drill (5).
This drill will give you the feel of the left forearm turning over, which is critical to the left forearm rotation through impact.
Try these two recommendations, and your shanks will be a thing of the past.
