Monthly Golf Tip by the Mel Sole Golf School.
On a previous trip, I spoke about the role of the right forearm during the downswing. I have noticed that a few students still cut across the ball while working on this drill. This is because they do not understand the role of the shoulders during the downswing. Watch yourself in front of a mirror. This is a great feedback tool. You will immediately see if you are starting your downswing with your arms (upper body) or your hips. (lower body) As usual, don't be afraid to exaggerate this movement. As you know that once you go to the golf course, the body is going to try and go back to its "comfort zone," and you'll be right back to square one.
I noticed students rotate the shoulders from the top of the backswing, causing the club to get in front of the hands and still come over the top.
Do not allow the shoulders to rotate, but keep the right shoulder back as long as possible by starting the downswing with a slight forward movement (or bump), preventing the lead shoulder from opening up.
Once the club has reached the impact position, the shoulders should still be square, and only after impact do the shoulders rotate out of the way.
(5. Torso rotates through.)
Work on a short version of this with a pitching wedge or 9 iron until you get comfortable. Then move up through your clubs to the driver. Once you understand this principle, your accuracy should really improve.
6. Through to a full follow-through.
