Clap your hands to better scores.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2 and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

I constantly work with students to have a good weight shift and a good extension through the ball and keep the clubhead online to the target for as long as possible. This motion will produce more accuracy and more consistency in your ball striking.

The Drill.

Step 1.

To understand the correlation between the arms and the body, I want you to stand up and stretch your arms out in front of you, as in picture #1.

Step 2.

Now, without moving your body, try to clap your hands together. You will see that you cannot as the right hand comes up short of the left.

There are two ways to make the hands reach each other. If you bend your lead arm, you can also accomplish joining the hands. This is a position you do not want in a golf swing!

Step 3.

Or you can rotate your body so that the right shoulder and right hip come around level with the left shoulder and hip, allowing the two hands to meet. In other words - Clap your hands to better scores

You can see the direct correlation between keeping the left arm straight and rotating the body into a position with the hips and shoulders facing the target.

Step 4.

Now put a club in your hands and try the same thing.  If you do not move your body through, the left arm will immediately break down.

Step 5.

If you allow your body to rotate, it is relatively simple to keep the left arm straight and create a good extension, which, as I said earlier, will produce those long straight shots you’ve been striving for.

So, the next time you go to the range, clap your hands a few times first. I’m sure you’ll love the results.
