In this month's video golf tip, Mel reports from México, teaching at the beautiful Club de Golf Malinalco. According to Mel, this course features the best greens he's ever put on. The greens are speedy and require a good read and solid technique. Mel shares his essential tips for putting on fast greens like the ones at Malinalco and Augusta National.
I love putting on fast greens. The ball always tends to roll very true, especially on short putts. But there is a special technique to learn to putt on greens faster than normal.
Hit it off the toe.
To start the ball slowly off the putter's face, you need to hit the ball off the putter's toe. When you hit the ball in the center of the putter is will sometimes come off the putter's face too fast, and it is hard to control the distance.
Putting off the toe deadens the hit. However, there is a soft feel, and the ball will start rolling a lot slower.
Soft Grip Pressure.
The pressure that you hold your putter will also affect speed. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being as tight as you can hold it and 1 being so soft that the club almost falls out of your hand, the pressure should be a 2!
