Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.
Who doesn't want to improve their putting? In this month's Mel In Motion video golf tip, Mel demonstrates an effective drill that will help you get a better feel for long putts.
The Drill.
You want to start with about 24 balls on the putting green. Do not do this drill at home on the carpet. This will affect your feelings about the course. Instead, use the balls that you typically play with on the course. For example, I play with Titleist Pro V1's, so all my balls in the drill are Pro V1's.
Start by aiming your putter at the hole and get into your putting stance. Look at the hole and not at the ball. Go ahead and hit the putt. Notice whether the ball finishes short or past the hole. The next putt is going to be slightly harder or slightly softer. Every putt is an adjustment on the previous putt. Eventually, you will be stopping the ball around the hole time after time. You have just trained your subconscious to know how hard to hit that putt. Repeat for different distances and slopes. Each time your eyes are focused on the hole and not the ball.
Taking it to the Course.
Once on the course, do your practice swings looking at the hole. Once you move into the ball, your eyes will be looking at the ball as you go ahead and hit the putt. Your subconscious will know exactly how hard to hit the putt. As you continue to do this drill on the putting green, you feel that the golf course will get better and better. Developing a feel for the long putt will lead to no three-putting. It will be a thing of the past!
