As Ben Crenshaw once said, "Putting is an Art, Not a Science." Some PGA and LPGA players are trying to turn reading greens into science by using Aimpoint, a green reading system, but as far as I can see, they are not putting any better since using this system.  In my humble opinion, putting is all instinct, and reading greens is no different.  By training your eyes to look at the terrain and evaluate both slope and speed, you can become an excellent green reader.  Like everything else in golf, the more you practice, the better you become!

Secrets to Reading Greens.

When reading greens, start while your opponents or playing partners are getting ready to play their shots, this saves time, and you don't feel so rushed when it comes to your time to putt.

Read the putt from at least three angles.  One:  From behind the hole to get an idea of slope left to right.  Two: From the side to get an idea of the slope up and down.  And again from in front of the hole to confirm your original read.  You now know both the line you want and the pace you want.  According to my read, my preference is to take my ball and use the line on the ball to aim to the spot right or left of the hole.  This allows me to now completely forget about the line, and I can focus purely on pace.  When doing my practice swings before hitting my putt, I feel exactly how hard I want to hit this putt.  Then step in and execute!
