Today we talk about reading greens.  How many golfers actually go out to practice reading greens? Very few, if any.  And yet, this is such an important part of scoring!  Check out a new way to read greens fairly accurately, and it's quick and easy as well!

How many times do you practice reading greens?  I bet the answer is never!  Don't worry, up until a few weeks ago, I would have given the same answer, and I've been a golf professional for over 50 years!

Purchase yourself at a digital level—I am using I bought from Ace hardware for a few bucks.  Small and light, I can keep it in my golf bag.

How to practice.

Go to a putting green and place a ball about 20 feet from the hole.  Stand behind the ball and straddle the line to the hole.  Now try and guess how much slope there is and in what direction. Once you have an answer, place the digital level right at the place you are standing and see if you were correct.  If not, close your eyes to try and feel the correct amount of slope.

Do this regularly on your golf course, putting green.  It took me about 2 months until I was able to guess correctly 95% of the time.  My putting stats show that this is working for me.

On the Course.

So when you are on the course, and you guess a 2-degree slope, standing right over the ball, hold 2 fingers up.  If it is a left to right putt, put the fingers' left edge against the flag, and wherever the right edge of the fingers falls is the amount of break needed.  Sound too complicated?  Not really.  After a couple of months of practicing this method, your green reading will be so much better and so much faster than the people you are playing with won't even notice.
